No people or livestock were hurt when a ditch burning got out of control on April 7 and spread to a nearby barn.
Carbondale and Rural Fire Department officers responding to a call from the barn’s owner at 11:48 a.m. found the barn almost fully engulfed in flames, and the roof collapsed shortly thereafter. Carbondale Police Department, Basalt Fire Department and Garfield County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the incident.
“Public safety was our first concern,” said Incident Commander Mike Wagner. “We responded quickly. I feel like we did a great job of suppressing the flames and keeping it from spreading.”
Wagner emphasized the need to take controlled burns seriously and take full precautions.
“Make sure you have a reliable water supply, perfect weather and enough people to really manage the fire,” he said.
