The Trump administration started separating children from their parents at the border and relocating them while their parents await trial for seeking refuge.

The immigration courts in this country are moving at the speed of smell, and even if they could manage to find and reunite with their young children, the damage has been done: physically, mentally, emotionally. How could we let this happen? It’s like we’re all standing around on the playground following the rules of the game, i.e., due process, Bill of Rights, blah blah blah… but these guys have taken the ball and gone home to look at Little Johnny’s dead bird collection. This administration is going to make me believe in a ‘special place in hell’ — and I went to Catholic girls’ school. I already know there’s no such place, just a natural process that’s currently out of whack because of human greed and hubris.

In one generation the Republican party has shifted from having a no-interference DIY (Do It Yourself) perspective, to this new judgey religious party that sells its own soul to any-and-every corporate devil. But since when do conservative Christians believe in separating mothers from their children?

“If only the ‘Christian’ far right had an example from the bible about a refugee mother fleeing tyranny with her baby under threat of having him ripped from her arms-” – Qasim Rashid, Esq.

America is changing fast, and it looks like we’re headed for a dictatorship — either that or the Cliffs of Insanity. The pieces are in place: propaganda instead of free press; all the major networks stick to the script, militarized police; American vets came to aid of the protesters at Standing Rock, while the police brought out water hoses and dogs, brainwashed youth; children separated from their parents at the border and fed into the (broken) system.

This is the scariest, most asinine policy with a huge potential to create more homeland terrorism. Why would a child torn from her parents and brought up in juvenile detention centers and foster homes have any sense of love or loyalty for the country that instigated her fate?

Instead of being welcomed with a safe place to stay and an itchy wool blanket, immigrants are now treated like criminals; caged and separated from their families. This is not the way we do it. America has never been as idyllic as it sounds, and we’ve had some seriously dark times, but the government taking a child from her mother, who has done nothing wrong, is malevolent.

Trump said he would “drain the swamp” but what he’s actually doing is pulling the plug on the bathtub that is the American system. Across the departments of our government there is a noticeable lack of filled positions, and time will tell, but I think it’s an intentional hijacking. A few fat cats at the very top, very wealthy — very hard to approach, and the rest of us, working in the salt mines til the day we drop dead.

According to predictions from the writers I read in my youth (Orwell, Bradbury, etc.) we’ll all be so soul tired from the lack of variety that we’ll welcome death with great relief. Oh yeah- and there won’t be nearly as much stuff on the shelves. Personally, I don’t want to spend my twilight years standing in line for toilet paper or chocolate, so I’d rather nip this in the bud.

It’s obvious our president is a liar with no ability to feel empathy for others, and he surrounds himself with equally unscrupulous souls, so I have to ask; what’s our plan here?! Are we really going to go peacefully into the dark night? Or, are we going to stand up to injustice and fight for everything this country was founded on?

If we don’t do something soon, it will only get harder as tyranny thrives on indifference. And if we give in to a dictatorship, then we’ll have to change our motto from land of the free and home of the brave. Because we’re not.
