The Carbondale Branch Library’s inaugural (L.I.T.) Crawl kicks off First Friday at 4 p.m. on June 6, with different performers at each of the new Art aRound Town installations.

“I love the idea of combining literary art with visual art on location,” said L.I.T. Crawl organizer Adrianna Pevec Brown. “The live performances will enhance and inform the viewers’ experience, making it richer and more textured than it would be if they were just looking at the sculptures. Sculptures installed around town are already an opportunity to experience art more personally, but the addition of literature and music invites us all to participate with the art in a more experiential way. Art inspires art, I do believe.”

The L.I.T. Crawl will include performances by Amy Kimberly, Werner Neff, Patrick Fagan, Olivia Pevec, Karl Gunselman, Tim Brogdon, Trina Ortega, Amelia Potvin, Cameron Scott, Carlos Herrera, Natalie Spears, Jim Hawkins, Morgan Williams, Claudia Putnam, SOL Theater, Sue Schnitzer, Annie Flynn and local kids.

The L.I.T. Crawl will culminate in an open mic at the library at 6:30 p.m. Performers, poets, writers, musicians, and listeners are encouraged to attend.

The 2014 Art aRound Town exhibit officially opens on June 5. The exhibit, organized by the Carbondale Public Arts Commission, showcases 13 artists from five states, including local sculptors Mark Cesark, Chris Erikson and Mike Rand. •  “Carbondale Clay National IX: Aisthesis” opens at the Carbondale Clay Center from 6 to 8 p.m. The show is a national juried and invitational exhibition of ceramic art. Jurors were Sanam Emami and Del Harrow. Featured artists include Chadwick Augustine, Jamie Bates Slone, Zimra Beiner, John Chwekun, Rachel Eng, Seth Green, Ursula Hargens, Ashley Jonas, Clay Leonard, Andrea Marquis, Patricia Sannit and Holly Walker, Aisthesis is a classical form of “aesthetics” that considers the way that objects are perceived through the senses, according to a press release. “Things that we are able to perceive and understand as art are dependent on cultural conditions and ideas, and these ideas are continually in flux,” said a clay center press release. “Aisthesis asks, ‘What becomes art and what comes of it’”? The exhibition is sponsored by Doug and Susan Casebeer.

 • Sculptor James Surls will discuss his “Sewing the Future” sculpture to be placed in the Highway 133 round-about from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Fourth Street Plaza. A scale model will also be shown. KDNK will interview Surls at 4 p.m.

 • Third Street Center from 5 to 8 p.m., CCAH closes out a retrospective of woodworker Bob Johnson and Annette Roberts-Gray’s “Commuter Watercolors.”

 • Artist Charles Morris gives a painting demonstration and shows news oils and watercolors at the Main Street Gallery and the Framer from 5 to 8 p.m.

 • Carbondale Acupuncture Center at 54 Weant Boulevard holds an open house from 5 to 8 p.m.

 • Michelle Zinanti said she expects to be working in her Harvest Pottery studio in the historic Carbondale jailhouse during First Friday.
