The Colorado Department of Transportation urged caution after numerous accidents on the Western Slope Monday morning, including a tanker truck rollover that closed Interstate 70 two miles west of Gypsum.
“We’ve got icy conditions everywhere,” said spokesperson Tracy Trulove. “If folks can stay in and wait a few hours until things get warmed up, it’s just not a good day to be out there.”
According to Trulove, the tanker was westbound at 6:15 a.m. when it clipped a box truck hauling empty beer cans and rolled. No injuries were reported, and crews were on scene to contain roughly 2,000 gallons of spilled fuel.
“It’s actually still pretty far back from the
Colorado there at Gypsum,” she noted. “Our hazmat crew will continue to monitor that.”
Traffic was rerouted onto Highway 6 for several hours before the Interstate reopened in both directions Monday afternoon.
