This month’s First Friday on Aug. 2 heads to the beach, with live music, limbo, Hula-Hoop contests, a conga line down Main Street and goldfish races in front of the Black Nugget.
“Flower leis are optional,” said a Carbondale Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman.
As usual, merchants will offer specials and celebrate all things Carbondale.
Downtown, Main Street will be closed from 5 to 9 p.m. Sponsored by Sopris Liquor & Wine and the Black Nugget, goldfish will be provided for the races, which start at 5 p.m.
In other downtown action:
• The Crystal Theatre presents the 2013 Sundance Film Festival hit “The Kings of Summer.” The film (rated R for language) is a coming-of-age comedy about three teenage friends who decide to spend the summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. The film starts at 7:30 p.m.
• Josh and Ananda play Fatbelly Burgers starting at 5:30 p.m.
• The Carbondale Clay Center hosts an opening for Staci DeBolt from 6 to 8 p.m.
• Marcel (Majid) Kahhak will paint live at his studio/gallery in the Dinkel Building starting at 6 p.m.
Elsewhere around town:
• Sol Theatre in the Cowen Center presents local author Amy Krakow, who will read from her book “The Mutt and the Monster, the Musical.” There will also be theatre games; the cost is $25 per child from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
• The new Carbondale Branch Library at 320 Sopris Ave. hosts the Fort Collins based TVS & Two fingers from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
• True Nature Healing Arts at 100 N. Third St. presents kirtan music with Gayan and Laura, and also serve free samples of tea and chocolate.
