  Carbondale Report: BOTT dines with BOCC

  The emerald ash borer, a jewel beetle native to north-eastern Asia, has arrived in Carbondale. This is the first confirmed case of the insect, known for devastating trees in the genus Fraxinus, on the Western Slope of Colorado. The beetle has no predator in North America and has spread to at least 35 states. Already, four ash trees in front of the Post Office have fallen casualty and were removed on June 19. According to a press release sent on June 20, there are around 470 ash trees on public property in Carbondale. Town Arborist Carl Meinecke will consult with various town boards on how to proceed. “It has probably been in town for two or more years,” said Meinecke, “but I am just now noticing the obvious signs as trees are starting to decline.” Find more information at csfs.colostate.edu/eab Photo by Jeanne Souldern
