Highway 82 grants
The Colorado Department of Transportation awarded Pitkin County more than $2.6 million in federal funding for fiscal year 2028 for safety improvements at two intersections along Highway 82 at Lazy Glen and Smith Way/Juniper Hill Road. A modified reduced conflict u-turn configuration, commonly known as a “Michigan Left,” will be installed down the road from the original Smith Way and Juniper Hill intersection, ending a history of problematic left-hand turns directly onto the highway. A left-turn acceleration lane will be added at the downvalley Lazy Glen intersection, which should lower the risk of crashes by a projected 30%. The upvalley access point to Lazy Glen will be converted to a right-in/right-out configuration to make room for the acceleration lane.
Cottonwood Pass
Cottonwood Pass, connecting Gypsum with the Roaring Fork Valley, opened to motorists on Monday, May 12. Drivers are urged to use caution when driving this curvy road, portions of which are not paved. Oversized vehicles require a permit to travel over Cottonwood Pass.
Mount up
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced that its Range Rider Program, meant to deter livestock depredation as wolves settle in Colorado, is officially underway. Two Colorado Department of Agriculture riders will be joined by 11 range riders recently hired by the state to monitor for wolves and deploy hazing techniques during the summer months while livestock is grazing on public lands. Some of the state range riders got an early start helping producers during calving season. It’s estimated that the program will cost $500,000 this year, and some of that revenue comes from the Born to Be Wild license plate program.
