Michael Ohnmacht

February 20, 1940 – April 25, 2026

Michael Ohnmacht, longtime stained-glass and mosaic artist, passed away peacefully at home in Glenwood Springs while listening to the Austrian Alpine music he loved from his youth.

Born in Austria, Michael began apprenticing in stained glass at age 14. He immigrated to the United States in 1959 and later settled in Aspen, where his stained-glass and mosaic work became well-known throughout the Roaring Fork Valley and earned national recognition for its master craftsmanship. Michael spent years living in the Crystal Valley in both Marble and Redstone. He also spent more than 35 years wintering in Brazil.

Michael lived a life filled with art, adventure, travel, skiing, cycling, fly fishing, chess and family and friendships.

He is survived by his children, John Ohnmacht and Alyssa Ohnmacht and her husband Dwight Whitehead; granddaughters Olivia and Erica Savard; his twin sister Hildegard Gamper of Italy; brother Karl Ohnmacht and his wife Hilda of Austria; and several nieces, a nephew, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and one great-grand-niece.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley. A celebration of life is planned for later this summer. Please email alyohn963@gmail.com for updates and information about the gathering.
