High school spring sports began in earnest this past week, with most of the pre-Spring Break action on the road away from Carbondale.
The Roaring Fork High School baseball team was at a tournament in Denver on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15, where they fell to Kent Denver 8-5 and to Colorado Academy 2-0.
Down 7-5 to Kent after scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning, Roaring Fork gave up three runs in the bottom half.
The Rams are now 0-4 going into spring break week, with a double-header home opener slated for Saturday, March 29 against Coal Ridge (11am and 1pm).
Girls soccer lost 2-0 at Fruita Monument on March 14 to fall to 0-1-1 on season ahead of a Wednesday trip to play Moffat County in Craig. The team is on break until April 1 at Battle Mountain, with the home opener slated for April 4 versus Glenwood Springs (6pm).
Roaring Fork girls lacrosse won 16-7 at Grand Junction on March 13. Points (combination goals and assists) leaders against Grand Junction were senior Hailey Wolfe and junior Jordyn Miller with seven each. Goaltenders senior Ella Gunning and junior Alyvia Malcolm combined for eight saves. The team is back home Saturday, April 5 against Mullen (1pm).
Roaring Fork’s boys and girls track and field team opened the season at the Rifle Invitational on March 14.
First-place event honors went to the girls 4×800 meter relay team of senior Morgan Fink, sophomore Sadie Silcox, junior Caroline Cole and senior Izzy Moon. Their winning time was 11:49.14.
Also placing for team points were: junior Nikki Tardif (sixth 200 meters, 28.96 seconds); sophomore Miley Stuart (sixth 3200, 14:59.55); freshman Levi Friday (sixth 800, 2:15.58); boys 4×800 team of senior Magnus Knable and freshmen Friday, Waylon Applegate and Kaiden Werth (fifth, 10:10.61).
