After falling 3-0 to the 3A Western Slope League-leading Steamboat Springs Sailors on their home field April 8, Roaring Fork High School’s girls soccer team rebounded two days later to score a 10-0 confidence booster over Moffat County in front of the home crowd.

Sophomore Annalise Bumgarner col-
lected three goals in the match, with one each coming from seniors Ella Gunshor and Kayla Kaufman, juniors Tess Hayes, Mia Jimenez, and Bianca Braun, sophomore Helena McCracken, and freshmen Kathleen Stuart and Jocelyn Rivera.

The Rams had a win-loss-tie record of 2-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the league before hitting the road to play the defending league champion Delta Panthers Tuesday evening (results not available at this writing).

“I think we have been doing well defensively, but offensively we needed some confidence to take that shot quickly, and this was a great game to do that,” head coach Nicole Cruz said after the Moffat win.

With a roster made up mostly of underclassmen, the team is also still learning with every game, she said.

“First touch for us is a big deal because it sets us up for the next play, as well as scanning the field as a ball’s coming to us,” Cruz said. “As they get older, it’s what you’re doing off the ball as well as on the ball. We have to make sure we’re supporting other teammates when they have the ball, and see where the defenders are so we can make the best run or option after that.

Cruz has had the opportunity to coach a core group of seniors through her four years as head coach — Gunshor, Kaufman, Maya Lindbloom, and Mali Sparhawk.

“They know what I expect, which they can translate to the team,” she said.

Stepping into the goalkeeper position this season are junior Hazel Jenkins and freshman Ashley Bautista. Neither had played the position before this year.

“They have progressed so much in the last month, just building confidence and learning to do those dives and handle the one-on ones,” Cruz said. “I’m excited to see how they progress.”
