Journalists and educators gathered for a five-hour event hosted by Colorado Mountain College in Aspen last Friday, May 29. The inaugural Roaring Fork Valley Civics and Media Summit featured a dozen speakers and focused on the future of local news, civic engagement, democracy and trust. The event, to which the public was invited, was free and included lunch. Three youth journalists, Vivienne Shapiro, Eleanor Carroll and Hana Creyts, earned Aspen Peak Press Awards for, respectively, “Best News Story,” “Best Opinion” and “Best Feature.” Shapiro and Creyts are both Sopris Stars and Carroll has served as the editor of Aspen High School’s Skier Scribbler. Aspen Daily News editors chose from among 41 entries submitted across the three categories, and Megan Tackett, associate publisher, described each article in detail and presented each student with $250.
