Opening Reception of “It Was Dark Inside The Wolf” by Jeff Stevens and “Site 1” by Saxon Martinez
March 1, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeJoin Carbondale Arts on First Friday, March 1 at the R2 Gallery in The Launchpad for the Opening Reception of two exhibitions: “It Was Dark Inside the Wolf” by Jeff Stevens and “Site 1” by Saxon Martinez.
Our eyes and minds are exposed to a brilliant amalgamation of imagery through entertainment, social media and advertising on a disposable content cycle that lasts less than 24 hours. Jeff Stevens’ exhibition “It Was Dark Inside the Wolf” artistically explores our daily consumption of visual information through mixed media technique and collage. Controlled, crafted and polished imagery is deconstructed and repurposed to create works that comment on the prevalent presence of sex, violence and wish fulfillment in entertainment and advertising culture.
Saxon Martinez’s “Site 1” installation is an investigation into people that lived thousands of years ago and how we live today. The artist will begin this exploration with one of the most intimate places that he interacts with on a daily basis: a home. Homes are places for new beginnings, a place where family history is taught, and where some of the strongest bonds are formed. Despite the importance that homes have, they are all built with common materials. Saxon plans to fuse common materials, deep-rooted cultural images, and a new age figure, meant to bridge the gap between modern-day cultures by stripping away appropriated and commercialized imagery and replace it with an unpretentious figure that can create conversations across various cultures in America. Saxon will donate 15% of his sales to support Valley Settlement.
