Lynn Burton: Colorado adventure turns out well

Departing Sopris Sun editor Lynn Burton has seen a lot of change in the journalism landscape in almost four decades working for an array of local dailies and weeklies. “A lot of reporters and photographers have come and gone. I was really fortunate a lot of times, with the economic ups and downs and papers opening and closing and coming under new ownership, to somehow or other hang on,” he said. “I’m a pretty good photographer for a writer, and I’m a pretty good writer for a photographer. I think what really kept me in the newspaper game in the Roaring Fork Valley is that I’m able to do both.” read more →

    Good morning Carbondale

It’s New Year’s Day at The Sopris Sun office and I can’t think of a more auspicious time and place to reintroduce myself to the readers. I don’t generally put a lot of stock in the calendar change. This year, though, Jan. 1 marks my first day as editor of Carbondale’s hometown newspaper, so I’m finding a lot more meaning in the date than usual. It’s a time for both reflection and new possibilities. read more →

Third Street spruce tree coming down

The Carbondale Board of Trustees has agreed that a large, mature spruce tree on South 3rd Street, immediately south of the Carbondale Branch Library, should come down because it presents a hazard to the library, neighboring homes and the adjacent Bridges High School building. The board came to that conclusion at a work session on Tuesday night, a meeting at which no decisions can be formally made or formal votes taken under the town’s charter, but where the trustees were able to give “direction” that concurs with the Tree Board’s decision to pull the tree down. read more →

COMMENTARY: Making friends at the Hamilton Elector rally

“He hasn’t been inaugurated yet ... he hasn’t been inaugurated yet.” This had been my mantra for weeks. My way to keep the toxicity of today’s political climate from poisoning my heart and mind. My way to not shut down, to stay in the present moment. Before I go any further, I’d like to acknowledge any Trump supporters who may be reading this. I know you’re out there, even in Carbondale, our blue-leaning, liberal, “hippie” town. read more →

Temperatures drop, Standing Rock support grows

As temperatures along the border between North and South Dakota have plummeted and winter has settled in firmly in the region, the conduit carrying supplies, vehicles and people between Carbondale and the besieged Standing Rock Indian reservation has grown and deepened. According to Tim Brogdon of Carbondale, a lead organizer of caravans that have for months been headed for Standing Rock, “The weather is absolutely brutal.” But, he added, the level of support from the Roaring Fork Valley “is even more intense, it just keeps getting bigger.” read more →

Carbondale Homeless Assistance reaches out to “housing challenged”

Glenwood Springs and Aspen each have year-round or seasonal homeless shelters, but what about the mid-valley? Who helps the homeless there? Well, a year ago Lynn Kirchner and others saw a need to help the homeless, especially during Colorado’s cold winters. The upshot is Carbondale Homeless Assistance (CHA), now in its second year. “We recognize the fact that there are different kinds of homeless,” Kirchner told The Sopris Sun. “There are the working homeless (those with a job but sleeping in their car because they just can’t seem to make ends meet), there are the transients, and there are those who have been affected by addiction.” read more →

Standing Rock update: “Water protectors” still at it

According to news reports and local accounts, despite the first round of bitter winter weather that has swept through the Dakotas, an unknown number of people remain in the various camps in the Standing Rock area, preparing to wage their protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) into the New Year and beyond. And it appears that supporters from the Roaring Fork Valley, who have been delivering supplies and assistance to Standing Rock for months, will continue to do so, starting with a meeting scheduled for tonight (Dec. 15) at the Third Street Center in Carbondale. read more →

Mayor, trustee clash over some housing regs

The Carbondale Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved amendments to its affordable housing guidelines, but not without some disagreement about certain provisions governing who qualifies to buy or rent subsidized housing in Carbondale. The dispute arose after Trustee Katrina Byars, an outspoken advocate for subsidized housing in town, argued that some of the qualifications for applicants for affordable housing might exclude the very people who most need the housing. read more →

RFHS students reflect on Trump win

In the weeks following the election of President-elect Donald Trump, there have been numerous reports of verbal and physical attacks of different kinds on immigrants, which observers have largely linked to anti-immigrant statements made by candidate Trump during the recent presidential campaign and to his supporters. Even here in the Roaring Fork Valley, a legal forum was held last Saturday on immigration issues and immigrants’ anxieties about their future under Trump. Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling, in an effort to reassure local Hispanics, told a local newspaper last week that his department is not about to start looking for illegal immigrants to deport. And elsewhere in Carbondale, while similar anxieties have been reported by some Hispanic immigrants, the mood at Roaring Fork High School was one of cautious hopefulness, at least as far as three student leaders could tell. read more →
