    Some ingredients for good health: good food, exercise and more

    Yesterday a childhood friend took me to task for a Facebook post. The post relayed a conversation between my wife and me and our two kids, ages nine and 11, regarding health and wellness. We were discussing how healthy our kids have been to date, how few medical visits they’ve had (eight total) and how they’ve never needed antibiotics. I mentioned in the post they have yet to drink soda or see the inside of a McDonald’s. Of course they occasionally get sick, but they recover with minimal intervention. I went on to say that we realize we have been fortunate and that our hands-off strategies don’t guarantee a perfect outcome. However, we truly believe that when provided with the essential ingredients for health (whole food, exercise, emotional support, etc), good health generally ensues. read more →

    Democrats, Republicans caucus on March 1

    Carbondale-area voters undoubtedly realize that 2016 is a national election year, but what some may not realize is that Colorado’s historical devotion to its caucus system means the time is here for interested residents to learn about and get involved in their party caucus meetings if they want to be active in party politics for the 2016 election. Carbondale Democrats (Precincts 1-4) will caucus at Carbondale Middle School on March 1, with registration at 6:30 p.m. and caucusing itself at 7 p.m. Carbondale Republicans will caucus at Roaring Fork High School on March 1, with registration starting at 6 p.m. and the caucus itself at 7 p.m. read more →

    Two groups step up to address Carbondale homeless issues

    On the eve of Thanksgiving of last year, local real estate broker Lynn Kirchner and her husband were wide awake in the middle of the night, with the same thing on their minds. They were thinking about a chance encounter earlier that evening with a homeless woman, and as Kirchner recalls, “I recognized the woman and realized that I knew her. She had been a local landowner and successful part of the community, and here she was at the bus stop dragging around all of her belongings in the middle of a frigid night.” The Kirchners literally couldn’t sleep, kept awake by the thoughts of that woman, and who knows how many in similar circumstances, wandering the night looking for a warm place to sleep as the temperature dipped below zero. By morning, they had agreed that something needed to be done. Kirchner went to work, reaching out to her network and the community at large to organize a meeting to examine the issue.     Carbondale skater to perform in Denver show

    If Sage Williams isn’t the finest figure skater in town, she’s certainly Carbondale’s best 15-year-old skater. And around here, that’s a hard trick to master. Williams is currently preparing to perform in an invitational “Fantastiks” show, sponsored by the Denver Figure Skating Club on March 10-13. Her program will include several spins: a camel spin, a flying camel, a sit spin and a catch-foot spin. Williams also jumps; she can manage a double Salchow and can land a single Axel, the most technically-difficult jump among the six types of jumps in figure skating. Williams began figure skating three-and-a-half years ago with pond skating, then skating on the rodeo arena rink, a local venue that lasts only as long as temperatures stay below freezing. The ice there can be a bit bumpy for figure skating because of rain, snow, melting and cracking, and also because hockey games can chop it up. read more →

    Ascendigo putting Carbondale on the map

    Last fall, signs saying “Ascendigo” replaced those saying “Extreme Sports Camp” in Carbondale’s Third Street Center. The name change reflected the coming of age of a local non-profit. By serving dozens of clients from the Front Range and across the United States, Ascendigo has begun to put Carbondale on the map of places making a difference for individuals on the autism spectrum. Currently, Ascendigo occupies two Third Street suites, employs 20 people, engages a host of volunteers and has even pioneered a residential care facility here in Carbondale. For kids, Ascendigo provides summer outdoor experiences and partners with the Aspen Skiing Company to offer winter ski and snowboard lessons. It also offers vocational support and retreats for “high-functioning” autistic adults. read more →

    P&Z recommends OK for City Market

    Carbondale’s Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) last week recommended that the Board of Trustees (BOT) approve a subdivision proposal to build a new City Market grocery store and other commercial spaces on a parcel of land at the western edge of town adjacent to the Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) property. The proposed stores would be built on land previously considered for two larger developments, known as the Crystal River Market Place and the Village at Crystal River, which as proposed would have involved construction of considerably more retail and some residential development. read more →

    Trustee distressed over deer incident

    A Carbondale trustee, distressed by the recent handling of a dead deer along Highway 133 near the new Ross Montessori School, is calling for the town and the state to get together on how such situations will be handled in the future. One outcome of the discussion may be a speed-limit reduction along the stretch of highway between the new school and Roaring Fork High School, which is located at the southern end of Carbondale. Another outcome could be the designation of the stretch of road near the Montessori school as a “wildlife crossing zone,” in recognition of the fact that deer hang out during the winter months in the River Valley Ranch (RVR) subdivision and in the small patches of trees along the highway between Ross Montessori and the northern portion of RVR. read more →

    Dance Initiative announces 2016 AIR lineup

    “When Dance Initiative first opened the Launchpad in the fall of 2014, we had much room to grow and immediately set our sights on making the studios at the Launchpad a place where both local and regional dance artists could create dances,” said founder Peter Gilbert in the group’s recent newsletter. “In 2015, Dance Initiative forged ahead with a whole new Artist-in-Residency program that hosted nationally known artist Molissa Fenley & Company, regional dance artist Patrick Mueller, and local choreographer Alya Howe,” Gilbert continued. “Each of these artists created original work, held open rehearsals, and shared their work through studio performances that many … were a part of.” read more →

    Carbondale fire district preps for May 3 board election

    The Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District is preparing for a May 3 election of district board members, although district officials are prepared for that election to not be held. At its Jan. 13 fire board meeting, the district’s directors approved a resolution that, first and foremost, appointed Fire Chief Ron Leach as the official “designated election official” or DEO, charged with overseeing the election. The second clause of the resolution provides that the DEO is authorized to cancel the election “if the only matter before the electors is the election of persons to office” and “if, at the close of business on the sixty-third day before the election there are not more candidates than offices to be filled.” read more →

    Alleged pot traffickers suspended in “limbo”

    A pair of Carbondale men were arrested on Jan. 13 in Ohio and currently are facing stiff penalties over charges of marijuana possession, and possibly marijuana possession with intent to distribute, after police reportedly found 123 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle during a traffic stop. But as of Tuesday, the cases against the two men seemed to be suspended in a kind of legal “limbo” between two different levels of Ohio’s court system, according to one official. Kelly Lance Harding, 47, and Craig Andrews Voigt, 46, both of Carbondale, reportedly were driving east along I-70 through Ohio when they were stopped by the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) about 25 miles west of Columbus, allegedly for following too close to another vehicle. read more →
